Downsize for Retirement and Upsize on Lifestyle

November 15, 2019 Lifestyle

Moving will always be one of life’s big decisions, no matter the reason or phase. It’s a very exciting time, thinking forward to your new home and new surroundings, but for many it can also bring up feelings of anxiety or nervousness. Of course, these feelings are very common with change.

However, one magic word can help ease those uncertain feelings – Planning! Yes, it sounds very simple, but when moving, a solid plan can make the process much smoother and you can re-focus your energy on the amazing new path that is waiting for you.

Downsizing to a Retirement Community

Moving also requires you to take a good look at what you need to bring with you to your new home. Many feel that they want to simplify their lives in their move to Parkland. Referred to as downsizing, many residents are leaving larger homes to take advantage of the smaller footprint at Parkland’s suites, as well as the amenities available, so there is more time to enjoy doing what you like best.

Best Ways to Downsize

We at Parkland have seen through many, many moves and want this process to be as enjoyable as possible as you begin the journey to your new home. Here are a few downsizing tips to get started…

Tip #1: Minimize

While you may think downsizing will come naturally as you start packing for your move, the time and effort it requires may surprise you. A great way to get started is referring to our old friend, Planning!

Start by making four lists:

  1. Items you definitely want to keep
  2. Items you would like to keep, but can go to storage for the time being (winter clothes, holiday decorations, etc.)
  3. Items you know you can donate/sell
  4. Items you can throw away

List item #3 allows for reuse of items, one great way is by planning a yard sale. Another alternative is to donate to those who may need it, for example, local charities such as Diabetes Canada are always looking for gently used clothes. Most towns and cities also have an easy to reach drop off site for local charities.

Tip #2: Make a schedule, stick to it

Set deadlines for yourself. Break the work into smaller chunks rather than trying to do everything at once. For example, tackle your home one room at a time.

Monday (BATH and LAUNDRY: linens, towels and laundry supplies)

Tuesday (EATING AREAS: kitchen and dining room)

Wednesday (LIVING AREAS: Living room, den, library and electronics)

Thursday (TREASURED ITEMS: photos albums, art and keepsakes)

Friday (The HEAVY LIFTS: furniture)

Tip #3: Check New Home Suites for Guidelines

Not sure if something will fit or is suitable for your new home?

Visit https://experienceparkland.com/locations/

  • Once there, select the location you have chosen to call home
  • Then select “suites”
  • You will then see a list of all living spaces, simply choose your own and flip through the photos to get a better idea of how things will look or fit into your new home.

When moving, remember, you don’t have to do it alone. It’s a big job, and you can spread it out over a reasonable amount of time recruiting friends and loved ones to help.
