Celebration of Giving

December 4, 2023 A Day in the Life

Parkland and Shannex has been fostering a spirit of compassion and solidarity for many years through its partnership with The Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia. Parkland at the Gardens resident, Maureen Banyard, a passionate advocate for mental health has taken charge of organizing numerous fundraisers aimed at supporting the foundation’s crucial work. Maureen and her fellow residents have not only opened their hearts but have created a supportive environment that encourages open conversations about mental health. The power of community proves that we are all in this together.

The most recent event, “The Celebration of Wreaths,” held on December 1, was a testament to the community’s commitment to mental health awareness and support. The event successfully raised over $25,000 for The Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia. Residents and community members were invited to participate by either donating a wreath or directly to the foundation. The halls at Parkland at the Gardens showcased the sponsored wreathes, proudly displayed in La Vie Bistro.

Maureen, as the driving force behind these fundraising efforts, emphasizes a message that resonates deeply with the senior community: mental health affects everyone, regardless of age. Her passion is not only to raise funds but also to raise awareness about the prevalence of mental health issues among seniors. “We are all seniors, and we understand how it feels. We’re all in this together.” Maureen shared.

The Celebration of Wreaths was more than a fundraising event; it was a compassionate gesture to remind everyone that they are not alone in their struggles. CEO and President of the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia, Starr Cunningham believes that fostering connections, especially during the holiday season, is crucial. “It’s a way to show people struggling with mental illness and addiction that you care. It’s so critical to connect over the holidays because it’s so important to let everyone know that they are not alone, and that there is support there for them.”

The funds raised to the Mental health foundation’s ongoing efforts to provide essential care, resources, and support to individuals facing mental health challenges. From counselling services to community outreach programs, the foundation plays a pivotal role in Nova Scotia’s mental health landscape.

The collaboration between Parkland, Shannex and The Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia stands as a beacon of hope. It is a reminder that through collective efforts, understanding, and empathy, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by mental health – that’s the power of a Parkland community.
