At Home With Joan

March 2, 2022 At home with

Joan is a resident at Parkland Truro in Nova Scotia. She moved into her one-bedroom plus den at Parkland in August 2021.

Where were you were born and where did you call home?

I was born in the small community of Economy, Nova Scotia. My dad ran a general store there for over 50 years and I loved helping him at the store when I was young!

What did you do for work and where did you go to school?

Following high school, I attended Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Secretarial Certificate. I worked in Halifax for nine years and then my husband and I moved to Bass River, New Brunswick where we raised our four children. I eventually had the opportunity to become a Postmaster in Bass River. I held this position for 21 years before I retired! I really enjoyed the “job” and interacting with people every day.

What surprised you the most about moving into Parkland?

Moving to Parkland was a big decision. I had been living alone, had some health issues and was uncomfortable with change. I was nervous about the move – would I fit in? Would I make friends? But I have been here six months and I know I made the right decision. Residents and staff are so helpful and friendly. Everyone is on a first name basis. I am happy here and my family is happy that I am in a safe place.

Discover life at Parkland

What’s your favourite thing about your suite?

My suite is very comfortable. I have a nice view, good neighbours and I come and go as I like. On the wall, I have pictures of my family who are really dear to me.

What’s your favourite design feature of your home?

When you enter Parkland, you come into a spacious lobby where complimentary tea, coffee, juice and water is available all day. Next to the lobby is my favourite room – the sun room. It’s nicely furnished and decorated. One side is all windows and when the sun is shining in, it’s my favourite space to relax, read or chat with other residents.

What’s your favourite wellness or social activity to do or attend at Parkland?

My favourite activity would have to be the games night. Residents gather and play cards, shuffleboard, pool, etc. We have a lot of fun and laughs – it’s very good for the mind and body.

What’s your favourite pastime when you’re not busy with friends or activities?

I do participate in organized activities but I also enjoy the privacy of my suite. I am fascinated by puzzles and look forward to the newspaper every day to get them done. I also like to read – we have a great library here and I help to keep it neat and attractive.

What’s a meal that you get excited about here?

It is difficult to select one meal as a favourite – I enjoy all of them! We have options for each meal and can choose what we want. I like the ordinary, old-fashioned meals with meat or fish, potatoes and vegetables. One of my favourite meals is the baked beans and fish cakes!

Who do you look forward to seeing every day?

I look forward to seeing Bree-Lynn, the Lifestyle Consultant every day. Her lovely laugh and cheerful personality are always a welcome sight!
