At Home With Barbara

March 2, 2022 At home with

Barbara is a resident at Parkland on the River in Miramichi. She first moved to Parkland in June 2020.

Can you tell me about where you were and where you called home?

I was born in Miramichi and lived here for most of my life. My childhood home was in Lower Derby. As I got older, I began to travel outside of New Brunswick to places like New York, Portugal and Mexico. Trips like that really opened my eyes to different ways of life and living but given the choice, I would still choose to live in a small town.

What did you do for work and where did you go to school?

I was in accounting all my life but when I was 69 I went back to school! I enrolled at the Bethany Divinity College and received my Bachelor of Theology when I was 73. I was always interested in biblical and religious topics and had so many questions, so I figured that the best way to get answers was to go to school and learn. From these lessons I came away with a new level of spirituality – I just love everyone.

What surprised you the most about moving into Parkland?

I was really impressed with the accommodations and staff. There are so many friendly people here to provide me with a great social life.

What’s your favourite thing about your suite?

My favourite thing about my personal suite is my window – my view of the river is beautiful.

What’s your favourite design feature of your home?

My favourite design element about my suite is the high ceilings and its open concept.

What’s your favourite wellness or social activity to do or attend at Parkland?

My favourite wellness activity here is the drawing classes. I try to attend every week. I love the two instructors – Wellness Coach Daphne and Bob who is also a resident here. It’s a friendly and comfortable activity learning alongside other residents. I also love the larger social events like our Christmas party and high tea. The enthusiasm from the staff and other residents was so delightful. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to get dressed up and have delicious food.

What’s your favourite pastime when you’re not busy with friends or activities?

When I’m not busy with friends and activities, I enjoy reading in my suite and going online to learn how to improve my drawing skills.

What’s a meal that you get excited about here?

I always look forward to the deep-fried fish with vegetables.

Who do you look forward to seeing every day?

Throughout the week I look forward to seeing two staff members – Lisa in Housekeeping and Scott who is both in Maintenance and one of Parkland’s Chauffeurs. I travel with Scott a lot and I appreciate how thoughtful and caring he is. With Lisa, I really enjoy her company and presence when she comes in to clean my suite.
