Spring into Safety and Wellness

April 13, 2026 Always Parkland

As the earth rejuvenates and repairs the damage caused by winter, we are left with the natural opportunity to reset our environments. Following winter, homes often need some extra care to ensure everything is maintained and safe.

Since spring is here, it is important to check for any winter damage in and around your home. Addressing these issues early-on helps prevent accidents, reduce stress, and create a safer, healthier living environment for the months ahead.

Here’s what to look for:

  • Water damage in walls, roof, windows, etc. Between ice damage and rapid thawing, homes are left at higher risk for water damage this time of year.
  • Cracked or shifted concrete on walkways and driveways that form tripping hazards. Concrete can crack in cold temperatures or shift when the ground thaws.
  • Weakened decks, railings, and porches. Cold winter weather can cause damage to outdoor structures causing, soft wood, loose boards, wobbly railings, or damage from shovels and salt.
  • Heating systems and vent clogging. These appliances work overtime in the winter and can become blocked with lint or dirt, increasing the risk of a house fire.

Assessing and repairing these damages is vital in maintaining a safe environment in your home. Spring cleaning is the perfect time for a full reset. Check/test your smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and carbon monoxide detector to ensure the batteries work, expiry dates have not past, and everything is up to code.

Spring is not only a time to care for your home, but also a time to care for yourself. Winter can often take a toll on mental health and it’s important to take time to focus on you. Spending time outdoors as the weather warms up has an amazing impact on mental health. Going on a walk, sitting outside, doing some gardening, or even opening a window can make your spring brighter.
