Sisterhood of Friendships
“The most important thing one woman can do for another is to illuminate and expand her sense of actual possibilities.” – Adrienne Rich, American Poet, Feminist.
International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate women’s achievements and raise awareness about discrimination. This year’s theme, “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress,” highlights the importance of addressing economic disempowerment and promoting inclusion. One shining example of this commitment is Maria Tarasio, a part-time concierge at Parkland on the Glen, who has dedicated herself to supporting women through her business, The We Network Canada.
The We Network’s mission is to connect women through local and online communities, fostering meaningful relationships and providing support for small businesses. Maria describes it as a place where women can come together to grow and succeed, emphasizing the strength and support found in women’s friendships. “I’m amazed, it validates that women support each other. Women is a sisterhood of friendships and that we are strong” Maria says.
Maria’s journey with The We Network began with a simple phone conversation on her way to work, which led to the creation of this empowering community. Since National Women’s Day last year, The We Network has grown to 110 members, offering a safe space for women to share their dreams and experiences.
One of the highlights of The We Network is their monthly gatherings, where members visit each other’s businesses and participate in various activities. For example, they recently enjoyed a day of horseback riding at one member’s equestrian business. Additionally, The We Network provides training sessions twice a month, covering topics that support members in their journey towards success. Maria also showcases members’ businesses on her Instagram Live twice a month, providing them with valuable exposure.
Despite her busy schedule, Maria remains dedicated to her role at Parkland, where she has been a beloved member of the team for eight years. She describes her work at Parkland as a labor of love, treating residents like family and bringing joy to their lives. Maria has also brought The We Network to Parkland through Vendor Markets, allowing residents and team members to experience a variety of vendors offering items such as jewelry, health services, clothing, cosmetics, and more.
This initiative has been met with enthusiasm from residents, who appreciate the opportunity to support women-owned businesses and celebrate the progress made by women over the years. “Residents have come up to me saying, ‘Go Maria Go! Why wasn’t this around when I was young.’ It really shows that women are worth more than what they experienced back in the day.” Maria says.
At Parkland, we strive to create a positive, inclusive, and productive workplace where everyone can thrive, grow, and contribute. Our environment reflects a shared sense of pride and purpose among residents and team members alike.
