It’s the Small Things That Make a Big Difference

October 26, 2023 A Day in the Life

Inside every Parkland, are full of incredible people who love to share their stories with team members and their fellow residents. Each community is designed with numerous areas to socialize, for both residents and visiting family and friends.

Parkland Fredericton resident, Sister Eleanor McCloskey moved into Parkland 6 years ago and enjoys having quiet time to read as well as socializing with everyone at Parkland. She is a pursuer of new knowledge and loves to hear everyone’s story.

Sister Eleanor was a teacher and she taught for many years in multiple different communities, from Souris, Prince Edward Island to Cape Breton and then to New Brunswick. She graduated from Teacher’s College in 1957 with her first degree in Bachelor of Science from Saint Dunstan’s University in Charlottetown, followed by a master’s in science education at Boston University. In 1999, she earned a Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry from Assumption University in Windsor, Ontario and in 2015, Saint Thomas University in Fredericton awarded Sister Eleanor with an Honorary Doctorate where she finished her career in the Education Faculty and Campus Ministry. “I have loved being a teacher and I am always grateful for the happy and adventurous life that has been mine!” Sister Eleanor says.

“I think my advice to new grads is keep learning about yourself and what you want to do and who you want to be. Be a loyal friend, pray everyday and trust that when one door closes, another will open.” says Eleanor.

When Sister Eleanor retired, she lived in a little house in Marysville with other Sisters from the community and when the house got more difficult to take care of, Eleanor made the decision to move into an apartment and then to Parkland. “I continue to work with committees in the city and facilitate sessions in adult learning.” Eleanor also takes the time to write a weekly newsletter for the Canadian English-speaking sisters across the community. “I keep thinking I didn’t get the hang of what retirement usually is considered to be, I like to keep busy and I will always keep learning.” Eleanor enjoys making choices about how she uses her time.

At Parkland, you can choose your perfect day – from our welcoming amenity spaces to daily activities, menu options and more. You can be as busy as you’d like, or you can curl up with a good book in your own private suite and recharge after a busy day. “I treasure good friends and healthy adult relationships that help me be the best person I can be. I pray for grace to meet whatever is ahead of me.” says Eleanor.

When asking Sister what her advice would be to new residents Eleanor said, “Try to be open to change. A big move involves loss but also benefits. Be gentle with yourself. Give yourself time to adjust. Know your capabilities. I like to say that a car has a big windshield – so you can see better of what’s in front of you.”
