Mi’kmaw History Month Presentation Shares Stories, Traditions and Teachings

October 15, 2026 Caring Communities
Mi'kmaw Traditions

As part of Mi’kmaw History Month in Nova Scotia, residents welcomed Elora Gehue, a Mi’kmaw woman from Sipekne’katik First Nation, for a presentation on Mi’kmaw culture, history and traditions.

Through storytelling and conversation, Elora shared teachings about the Mi’kmaq as the original people of Mi’kma’ki and spoke about connections to land and water, language, family, community, traditional medicines and seasonal ways of life.

Residents had the opportunity to hear Mi’kmaw words and stories, learn about cultural items and traditional medicines, and ask questions throughout the session.

Elora leads Indigenous Relations with Halifax Regional Municipality, where she supports Indigenous engagement, cultural learning and reconciliation. She is passionate about sharing Mi’kmaw stories, teachings and ways of knowing, and spoke about the importance of passing knowledge between generations.

A key message of the presentation was that Mi’kmaw culture is a living culture that continues to be practised, shared and passed on today.

Recognized each October, Mi’kmaw History Month in Nova Scotia celebrates the history, culture, achievements and contributions of the Mi’kmaq. We thank Elora for joining us and helping residents learn more about the traditions, stories and teachings that continue to shape Mi’kma’ki.
