When a spouse is diagnosed with dementia, it reshapes a couple’s daily life, routines, and relationship. Jim and Gail, residents at Parkland Ajax, found support and continued connection at Parkland. Jim and Gail moved into Parkland Ajax, starting with a shared suite in an Independent Lifestyle apartment. Shortly after moving in, Gail was diagnosed with dementia and needed more care as time went on. Parkland offers different levels of care, meeting residents where they are.
With these options, Gail was able to stay close to her husband while receiving the support she needed by moving to our Supportive Lifestyle Memory Care floor. We understand how important it is for couples to remain together through these changes. For Jim and Gail, living in the same building means they can still share meals, attend appointments together, and navigate the changing realities of dementia side by side.
We recognize that Dementia is challenging for both partners. While Gail is receiving Alzheimer’s care, we provide Jim with support and knowledge so he can be there for his wife, while keeping up with his own health. Through our Caring and Sharing Group we create a supportive space for the families and loved ones of our residents with dementia to connect, share experiences, and ask questions to get support and learn how to help someone with dementia.
At Parkland, memory loss care is about more than just providing support, it is about providing meaningful experiences and delivering safe, quality care for residents, while preserving connection.
