Building Community and Purpose: The Residents Council at Parkland West Bedford
At Parkland West Bedford, residents are encouraged to build meaningful connections, take part in purposeful activities, and feel truly at home. Across the community, resident involvement plays an important role in shaping daily life, and one example of that spirit is the 670 Residents Council Association, a resident‑led group created specifically for the community at The Pemberley.
The Council represents residents of The Pemberley and provides a structured way for them to contribute ideas, advocate for their peers, and collaborate with on‑site teams. While this Council is unique to The Pemberley, resident leadership and participation are embraced across Parkland West Bedford, with similar opportunities for residents to get involved throughout the community.

Since its formation, the Residents Council has already been involved in a wide range of meaningful initiatives, including:
- Promoting the Vial of Life program to support resident safety
- Hosting information and social sessions on topics of interest to residents
- Supporting annual influenza and COVID vaccination clinics
- Giving back through supporting the Gateway Community Foodbank
These efforts reflect the Council’s commitment not only to life inside The Pemberley but also to the wider community.
For many residents, involvement in the Council offers something deeply important: a sense of responsibility and engagement. Rollie Burton, who has long been involved in community music and volunteering, now serves as President of the Residents Council. Having held similar roles in the past, he finds the experience both familiar and fulfilling.
“It’s always a pleasure to do this sort of thing,” Rollie explained. “My fellow councillors are just wonderful, and it’s very informal. I’m still learning, but I’m really enjoying it. It’s nice to have a responsible job.”
One of the unique strengths of The Pemberley is the balance between management-led programming and resident-led activities. As one resident pointed out, there are two calendars posted throughout the building: one for Parkland-led recreation programs, and another for activities created and driven by residents themselves.
This distinction is important. Resident-led programming empowers individuals to take ownership of their interests, whether that’s bridge, cribbage, bingo, music, or social gatherings. Participation naturally ebbs and flows, but the opportunity is always there, and that choice is key.
“For a building like this, it keeps people engaged,” Ed Empringham shared.
The creation of the Residents Council at The Pemberley is a step forward in resident engagement. It recognizes that the people who live here bring with them lifetimes of experience, talent, leadership, and care for others.
