For food lovers, autumn may just be the best season of the\nyear. When else does one holiday revolve around a lavish turkey dinner and the\nother is all about candy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First up is Thanksgiving. Although our American neighbours celebrate\nit later, for most Canadians Thanksgiving is firmly associated with the\nchanging colours of the trees, the first hint of winter and Hallowe\u2019en\ndecorations being set up around town. But why do we celebrate Thanksgiving when\nwe do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCanadian Thanksgiving got its real start in 1859, when a\ngroup of Protestant clergy petitioned the government for a mid-week,\nchurch-centric holiday to celebrate the harvest.\u201d Later, \u201cin 1907, the railway\ncompanies convinced the Canadian government to move Thanksgiving from mid-week\nto Monday, essentially creating a whole new long weekend.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n It was not until 1957 that Thanksgiving found its current\nhome on the second Monday of October, when Parliament made an official decree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Just a few weeks after Thanksgiving, kids all over Canada dress\nup as the year\u2019s most popular superheroes or classic monsters. All over town,\ngroups of ghosts and ghouls travel through the cold crisp air in search of scares,\nexcitement and, most importantly, candy. Shuffling along streets lined with\nhouses decorated with skeletons, broomsticks, cobwebs and bathed in menacing\norange light, it\u2019s nearly impossible not get caught up in the spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is also the perfect time of year to treat yourself to\nsome delicious candy or curl up on the couch to cower with a loved one while watching\nclassic horror movies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Did You Know?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Making the Most of Your Residence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n One constant in the autumn season is entertaining family and\nfriends.
