John W. Anderson, Activity Leader at <a href=\"https:\/\/experienceparkland.com\/en\/locations\/parkland-at-the-lakes\/\">Parkland at the Lakes<\/a> (PAL) in Dartmouth, N.S., began playing piano during his lunch breaks, inviting residents to sing along. What started as a casual gathering quickly grew into something special. Week after week, more voices joined in, until over 40 residents were filling the room with song. From that moment, the <strong>Parkland at the Lakes Resident Singing Group<\/strong> was born.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The group\u2019s official name, <strong>Joyful Hearts<\/strong>, came about in a memorable way. One afternoon, residents gathered in Harris Hall to rehearse a country classic, <em>Picture in a Frame<\/em> by Moe Bandy. With only acoustic guitars, the music sounded so good that when the last note faded, John exclaimed, \u201cI think we just formed a band!\u201d Everyone agreed, and when someone suggested \u201cJoyful Hearts,\u201d the name stuck. It perfectly captured the spirit of their sound: uplifting, warm, and full of joy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, Joyful Hearts gathers every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at Harris Hall. When the music starts, it\u2019s not just the members who join in. Residents passing by often stop to sing a tune, clap along, or even dance. What began as a simple lunchtime idea has become a tradition that brings the entire community together.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the talented members are two exceptional guitarists who recently joined the PAL community: <strong>Sanford McGrath<\/strong>, a retired Canadian Armed Forces member from Cape Breton, and <strong>Derek Chaulk<\/strong>, originally from Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Both are accomplished vocalists as well, and Sanford even recorded a 16-track CD titled <em>Sentimental Journey<\/em> in his home studio.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The group\u2019s lead singers bring impressive credentials as well. <strong>Jim Devine<\/strong>, from Yarmouth, has appeared on local television music programs, while <strong>Frank Hartman<\/strong>, originally from the United States, released a professionally produced CD called <em>The Way You Make Me Feel<\/em>. Their voices, combined with the talents of other members, create a rich and dynamic sound.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since forming, the Joyful Hearts have performed five concerts at PAL, including themed events like a Valentine\u2019s Day celebration, a Halloween party, and most recently, a Country Music Show. Each performance has drawn a full house and glowing reviews, not just for the music, but for the sense of connection it brings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The group continues to grow, welcoming new members such as harmonica virtuoso <strong>Clint Varner<\/strong>, a longtime resident of Inverness Hall, and several percussionists who add rhythm and flair. It\u2019s a true success story, one that highlights the power of music to unite people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the benefits go far beyond entertainment. Research shows that group singing improves mental health, strengthens social bonds, and even boosts physical wellbeing. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Parkland at the Lakes, the Joyful Hearts are proof that through music, they\u2019ve built a community where every note carries friendship, laughter, and joy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It all started with a simple idea.
